BREAKING: BBDO West Breaks California Lottery Campaign

Energizer: The Bunny is Back

Energizer "Mailman"
After a two year hiatus -- during which the 15-year-old icon was relegated to a bit part in the brand's visual tag -- the Energizer Bunny returns to center stage today in a campaign from TBWA/Chiat/Day/L.A. In three new spots directed by Sandwick Films' Jeff Gorman, we see people who are models of persistence -- a harried housewife, a rain-drenched mailman, a surfer who bounces back from a wipe out -- followed by the drum-beating bunny and a new tagline: "Keep Going."

BREAKING

California Lottery "Gas"
Although we have often predicted that this event would signal the end times, BBDO West -- which won the California Lottery account in April after a contentious three year review -- has moved on to actually making ads for the client, apparently without catastrophe. The new campaign -- directed by Omaha Pictures' Paul Gay -- is based around the idea that people should "take a chance where the upside is millions of dollars and the downside is only a buck." That idea is driven home with scenarios in which -- unlike the lottery -- the downside far outweighs the upside. In one spot, for example, a man opts for the upside of being right about how far his car can go on empty, but risks the downside of being eaten by wolves.

MOVERS

Designer Ian Lynam, formerly of his own eponymous design studio, and art director Nico Ammann, formerly of Advico Young & Rubicam/Zurich, have joined Venice-based communications collective 86 the Onions. ... Former freelance producer Jennifer Moore has joined Minneapolis postproduction company Hi-Wire. ... Werner Domittner, formerly of Procter & Gamble, has been named managing director of the Cincinnati office of brand consultancy Interbrand.

ON THE WEB

Adweak, the Onion-inspired source for fake ad industry news, has unexpectedly returned after a 17-month hiatus. It is now formatted as one of those "weblogs" we have been hearing so much about. In the new issue, the anonymous pranksters take swipes at Cliff Freeman, David and Goliath and -- somewhat predictably -- Donny Deutsch.
