"No Spot"
Showcases Films by Ad Folks
The ad crowd went
Hollywood Tuesday night, as Creativity's first No Spot
Short Film Festival screened a diverse program of shorts, all
created by members of the ad industry, at the Regal Cinemas in
Manhattan's Union Square. Kicking off the evening was the
world premiere of The Wake-Up Caller, a funny,
politically-charged short, set in a Texas chain hotel, from
Hungry Man's Bryan Buckley. "I've spent the last seven months
living in hotels," Buckley said of the inspiration for the
film over pre-screening cocktails.
The festival's 14 finalists, which were all screened at the
event, included a thriller, dramas and several comedies from
ad professionals in the U.K., the U.S., Argentina and
Australia. The evening's Grand Prize and the prize for best
direction went to Partizan/London's Vito Rocco, whose
Goodbye, Cruel World tells the darkly funny and
touching story of a young boy who carries on a friendship with
an elderly neighbor even after the neighbor dies. The First
Runner-Up was The Mood, by Fredrik Bond, about a man
whose boorish boss (played by Bond's producer, MJZ's David
Zander) starts a chain reaction of bad karma. The
screenwriting prize went to former TBWA/Chiat/Day/L.A.
creative Erik Moe for Young Artie Feldman, about a
fifteen-year-old agent for fast food employees, and best
editing went to Sir Jonathan Griffith for his work on Johan
Kramer's The Invention of the Flipper, a whimsical
demonstration of film-aging techniques. All the winners and
finalists can be viewed at AdCritic.com. -Melanie

R/West's "Trunk
Monkey" Returns

Suburban Auto Group "Baby"
|
| From
the car dealership creative capital of Portland, Ore. -- where
both Thomason Autogroup and the Suburban Auto Group have
consistently commissioned good ads in this most disrespected
of ad categories -- comes another gem. This one is a follow-up
to the low-budget favorite "Trunk Monkey" for the Suburban
Auto Group from Portland Agency R/West -- a spot that was
honored by both the One Club and the AICP last year. In the
sequel, directed by X-Ray Films' Jeff Gordon, it turns out the
monkey isn't just good for self-defense, he's also a licensed
obstetrician.
Adcenter Roast to Turn
Partner Against Partner
Following
up on last year's rowdy roast of Joe Pytka, the VCU Adcenter
has announced the details of its second annual fundraiser,
which will pit a trio of industry heavyweights against their
former partners. Dubbed "AdChemistry," the evening will
feature Ogilvy & Mather vice chairman Steve Hayden telling
all about his former creative partner Lee Clow; Berlin
Cameron/Red Cell CEO Andy Berlin dishing about former agency
partner Jeff Goodby; and David Kennedy presenting the inside
scoop on Wieden + Kennedy partner Dan Wieden.
The event, which benefits the Adcenter at Virginia
Commonwealth University, will take place on Nov. 4 at Gotham
Hall in New York. For details, visit www.adchemistry.com.
MOVERS
Guy
Bommarito, former senior VP and executive creative director at
GSD&M in Austin, and Matt Horton, a former VP-creative
director at Leo Burnett/Chicago, have joined FCB/Chicago as
group creative directors. The pair will work on the Boeing’s
Connexion and KFC accounts, respectively.
ON THE WEB
As part of
Advertising Week, the Advertising Tax Coalition -- a
collection of trade organizations -- has unveiled a study that projects the ad
industry will bring $151 billion into New York City's economy
this year. So next year we want two Advertising Weeks,
or we'll just up and move the whole operation to
Knoxville.
