Cole & Weber, Rainier Answer the Call of the Wild

Rainier "Tourists"
Last month, a black bear made international news by rummaging through a campsite at Baker Lake resort near Seattle and guzzling three dozen cans of Rainier Beer. Even more remarkable, the alcoholic ursine gave Busch beer a try but apparently preferred the local brew.

Rainier's agency, Cole & Weber/Red Cell, immediately sprung into action, according to ECD Guy Seese, and held an online contest to name the Rainier bear. After 800 submissions and an online poll, the bear was dubbed "Brewtus." Now, Cole & Weber is breaking the brewer's first TV commercials in 15 years, all based on the beer bear -- as portrayed by a large man in a slapdash bear suit. One spot, directed by Mike Prevette, "dramatizes" the way the real bear was eventually captured, as Rainier's spokesmen lure the bear/man into a trap with honey, donuts and two cans of Rainier. Two other spots, directed by Jack and Carol Hodge of Alarming Pictures, further explore the adventures of Brewtus.

Of the buzz potential provided by the real life story, Seese chalks it up to "a little bit of luck and a whole lot being prepared."

BREAKING

United Way/NFL "Kevin Carter"
This season, Y&R/New York has thrown a twist into its long-running campaign for the United Way and the NFL with a series of spots that show highlights from a fictitious "United Way Draft," where NFL pros are drafted into service by charities and community groups. The spots, directed by Go Film's Neil Tardio, feature appearances by the Rams' Marshall Faulk, the Titans' Kevin Carter, Chad Pennington of the Jets, the Patriots' Tedy Bruschi and Brian Dawkins of the Eagles.

MOVERS

German director Matthias Zentner -- who shot Goodby, Silverstein & Partners' recent Haagen-Dazs campaign via Munich studio Velvet Mediendesign -- has signed with New York's foreignfilms@cYclops for exclusive U.S. representation.

He's been in town less than a month and already David Lubars is getting the glitterati treatment from New York magazine? Maybe it's because he looked so good on the cover of last month's Creativity. You scoff? For further evidence that Gotham rags are taking their marching orders from Creativity, see the New York Times Magazine's Q&A with Bruce Mau. That's page 12 of September's Creativity to you and me.
